Hi. Is there anyone here successfully running dual MTi2s on a Mac mini? I am unable to find the magical combination of hubs/adaptors to make them work. If not, perhaps we can harness the power of this forum to make it happen. Let's treat this like that scene in Apollo 13 where the engineers at mission control had to solve a problem using the same onboard supplies the astronauts had. Here's what I have:
Latest Mac mini with the following connections:
HDMI x1
USB3 x2 (one of these reserved for iLok2)
Thunderbolt3 x4
I also have these cables/hubs/docs/adaptors:
OWC Thunderbolt2 dock (USB3 x3, Firewire 800 x1, Thunderbolt2 x2, HDMI x1)
HDMI splitter box (powered)
USB splitter box (powered)
HDMI to Thunderbolt2 adaptor
HDMI to Thunderbolt2 cable
USB3 to Thunderbolt3 adaptor
Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 adaptor
VGA to Thunderbolt2 adaptor
Both sets of cables provided with the monitors
Here's what I've tried:
1) HDMI output of the Mac into the HDMI splitter box and the touchscreen outputs from each monitor into a port on the USB splitter box. This was unsuccessful b/c the Mac has no idea what happens to the HDMI signal once it hits the splitter box so it does not recognize dual monitors, thus preventing me from establishing one of the monitors as the primary as described in Slate's set up vid.
2) HDMI output from one monitor into the sole HDMI input on the Mac. HDMI output from the other monitor using HDMI to Thunderbolt2 cable into Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 adaptor into Thunderbolt3 input on Mac. Only the monitor which was plugged directly into the Mac's HDMI input was recognized. The manual does state that the monitor will not work if the HDMI output goes through an adaptor before it hits the Mac but I had to try it anyway.
3) Every conceivable combination with the OWC doc. Nada.
If you all can help me make this work, I'll make a video explaining all the necessary connections so others can hopefully avoid my frustration. If it turns out to be an incompatible pairing, I think it should be disclosed somewhere on the Slate website or in this forum. I've lost a week of productivity over this.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
